Giving Something of Great Value

“Hey, you look great with those brand-new red sneakers that match your red hat.”

I recently greeted one of my patients, Jose, with these words. He was at Katallasso for a follow-up appointment. A newly diagnosed diabetic, he was anxious to hear the lab results since his last appointment four weeks prior.

Jose’s blood sugar averages are down 20%! His extreme nervousness gave way to one of the biggest, brightest, and most gracious smiles I have ever seen.

Through his joyful tears, Jose thanked me for the care he had received. He gave me a warm, embracing hug as he got up to leave. Jose then sat back in his chair and took off his new bright red sneakers. He said, “Here, these are for you as a thank you for what you have done for me.” Jose even confirmed that they were my shoe size.

Fighting back tears, I thanked him and said the sneakers looked better on him. At that moment, Jose was willing to give something of immense value that he had and was willing to walk home barefoot as a result. These are special moments here at Katallasso, when we see God affecting our patients and our medical providers.

Jose put his new sneakers back on and then scheduled a follow-up appointment.

Because of your generosity, and the generosity of community members like you, uninsured patients like Jose are moved to tears by the genuine care and love they feel at Katallasso.

Thank YOU for giving something of great personal value to care for another, to value them, and to show them that they are loved.

God’s blessings,
